More than 1.8 million people in Germany suffer from dementia.

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia.

Drugs that could have a positive impact on the course of Alzheimer’s disease are in the process of being approved in Germany.

In our memory clinic, we offer a wide spectrum of diagnostics for patients with new cognitive disorders. This ranges from neuropsychological testing to blood and liquor tests and state-of-the-art PET imaging methods. We provide comprehensive advice on pharmacological and supportive treatment options and put patients and their families in contact with self-help groups and support groups for family members.

    Dementia

Dementia represents one of the greatest challenges in health care both for patients and their families and for society as a whole. The term “dementia” describes the loss of cognitive abilities such as memory, speech, action planning and spatial orientation. Dementia can have a variety of causes – from deposits of specific proteins in the brain and tissue damage due to circulatory disorders to certain infectious diseases, hormonal imbalances and so-called “pseudodementia” if depression is present. With the emergence of the first therapies that can have a positive impact on the course of certain forms of dementia, the precise determination of the cause of the dementia becomes even more important.

    Clinical diagnostics

When patients visit the clinic, many of them are offered extensive neuropsychological tests in addition to detailed information about their symptoms and medical history provided by the patients or their family. These neuropsychological tests help us to better understand the cognitive areas in which deficits are most pronounced – which allows us to make conclusions about the underlying disease. Our diagnostic repertoire includes comprehensive blood analysis as well as examination of cerebrospinal fluid, which is extracted in our outpatient clinic – admission as an inpatient is not necessary.

    Instrument-based diagnostics

In complex and ambiguous cases, positron emission tomography (PET) can provide clarity about the disease underlying the dementia. In close collaboration with our colleagues in the department of nuclear medicine, we offer various PET examinations so that we can make as precise a diagnosis as possible.

Genetic dementia and Alzheimer's in Down's syndrome

A particular focus of our outpatient clinic is genetic dementia. These patients offer become ill at an early age and have several cases of dementia in their family. We offer patients with confirmed genetic dementia the chance to take part in observational studies, which enables them to participate in the newest scientific developments.

We offer tailored diagnostics for people with Down syndrome in the event of a new cognitive disorder. A characteristic of chromosome 21 means that Down syndrome is accompanied by a significantly higher risk of the development of Alzheimer’s disease. Since the diagnostic methods established in the general population are only applicable to a limited extent in these patients, we have developed a special diagnostic program for this patient group.
