Meningitis and other serious CNS infections
Prof. Dr. Uwe Ködel
Prof. Dr. Matthias Klein
CNS infections are usually severe illnesses and some can even be fatal.
Patients with meningitis often have to be treated in the intensive care unit.
- Those who survive often suffer from long-term complications.
- A quick diagnosis and targeted therapy are crucial to the prognosis.

Infections of the central nervous system (CNS) include bacterial meningitis, abscess of the brain, and viral brain infections. In addition, there may be infections of the spinal cord and the nerve roots, the latter of which includes neuroborreliosis. In the Department of Neurology at the LMU, we treat the whole spectrum of CNS infections in outpatients and inpatients.
For many years, the neuroinfectiology team has been one of the leading research groups worldwide in the field of experimental basic research on bacterial meningitis. Our research focuses on how pathogens in the central nervous system are identified and how the immune system acts against the pathogen. Another important aspect is how damage to the brain occurs. The aim is to find starting points for new therapies for bacterial meningitis so that we can improve the prognosis.
Another focus is improving the clinical care of patients with CNS infections, from cerebrospinal fluid analysis to optimizing the treatment of patients in the intensive care unit. Since CNS infections are fairly rare diseases, this can only be achieved by networking with other clinics – here the research group also takes a leading role in various projects in Germany.
