Most of the patients who suffer from a stroke are older. But not all of them. Around 15% of all strokes occur in people between the ages of 15 and 55. This is always a dramatic event for young otherwise healthy people who are torn from their normal life – with significant consequences for their family and career. An important focus of our research is the causes and specific therapies for stroke in younger people.
Atrial fibrillation is a widespread disease that affects a quarter of people in middle age. This cardiac arrhythmia is the main cause of stroke and is often not noticed by those affected. We focus on finding atrial fibrillation and eliminating it as a cause of strokes.
In addition to stroke, many stroke patients also suffer from delirium (an acute disorder of alertness and perception) because they have been torn out of their normal environment and are suddenly severely ill, lying on an observation ward. Delirium always worsens the prognosis of stroke therapy. Therefore, we are developing individual, modern AI-supported methods so that patients can negotiate the difficult situation in which they find themselves.
